Antarctic Expedition – An Interaction Ms Reena Kaushal, the first Indian woman to reach the South Pole, visited Gyan Jyoti College on 12th March, 2010 and delivered a lecture on her challenging journey across the daunting landscapes of the Antarctica. She was one of the eight member team from Commonwealth countries who undertook the venture under the banner of “The Kaspersky Lab Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition”. The purpose of the adventure is to create awareness about environment and to demonstrate woman power. The students and the staff actively participated and watched the power point presentation made by Ms. Reena Kaushal. EYE DONATION AND AWARENESS PROGRAMME Siliguri Lions Eye Bank organized a seminar on the importance of Eye Donation to eradicate blindness. Mr. D.K. Agarwal, Chairman, Siliguri Lions Eye Bank spoke on the occasion followed by a short film on the problem. The touchy document made a tremendous impact on the participants. AIDS AWARENESS Red Ribbon Society organized a seminar on AIDS on the World Aids Day. Dr. R. Bhattacharya gave a lecture on the dreaded disease and how to solve the problem of AIDS. His interesting and thought provoking lecture made a tremendous impact on the participants. CULTURAL WEEK CELEBRATION Like every year this year also cultural week was organized at Gyan Jyoti College .The cultural week was a great success with participation by the students in every event .Inauguration of the cultural week was done by our Principal Prof Jayaraman Suresh .The cultural week started from 1st february 2010 with the first event which was a Debate competition. The order of events held was as follows 2nd rd feb Rangoli competition, 3rd feb Quiz competition, 4th feb dance competition, 10th feb painting competition and the last event was singing and band competition which was held on 11th feb 2010. A Laudable achievement by Gyanjyotian. Ms. Chitrani Malakar, a student of BBA 3rd semester of Gyan Jyoti College participated in the inter-collegiate debate competition organized under the auspicious of Indian Association of Parlimentarians on Population and Development and was adjudged the 1st position winner by the panel of judges. She will take part in the All India Competition to be held in Delhi under the patronage of the same organisation Some of the Seminars held in 2009. Seminar Topic: Paschim Banga Vigyan Manch,On “Nature, Society and Environment” The speakers were dr. Abhijit roy – dept. Of chemistry, nbu; dr. Aninda pal – retd. Prof. Of the dept. Of geography, nbu and an international geographer; mr soumen nag, dr. Sumitra naha, mr abu mounir and mrs sangeeta reddy (faculty members of gyan jyoti college) and students – mr diwakar bhagat (bba – 6th sem); ms madhumita bhowmick (bba -6th sem). It was a very effective seminar where topics like global warming, pollution of the atmosphere and the seas were touched upon. Presentations were also given by the speakers which brought the issues into the right perspective. It was a very informative seminar which benefitted all those present there as experienced, erudite and well-informed people spoke on various subjects. Seminar Topic Seminar on Bio-Informatics by BCA department in collaboration with NBU. The speakers were dr. Arnab sen who is the in-charge of bio-informatics of north bengal university and three research scholars along with mr Ardhendu MAndal who is lecturer in the computer science and application dept. And spoke on parallel computing, on research in software in bio-informatics and the scope there is in this field. They also explained the presence of a genetic card which is determined according to the characteristics of a person. Accordingly, medicines are applicable to a person.
